Lydia Kota, a 22-year-old wife of Lusaka’s Misisi compound turned to the Matero Local Court for resolution in form of divorce after enduring repeated instances of her husband, 24-year-old Likonge Nyundo reciting another woman’s name during adult games.

Kota narrated that their bedroom had become a “romantic radio station” where Nyundo’s voice echoed his girlfriend’s name, drowning out the romantic atmosphere they should be creating as a couple.

“Instead of whispering sweet things into my ears whenever we are making love, he passionately calls out his girlfriend’s name,” she stated.

It was further revealed that when Kota was pregnant, she went to her mother’s house to give birth and when she returned to her matrimonial home, she was devastated to find that her husband had brought a girlfriend in their house.

As if the heartbreak and betrayal of her husband’s infidelity were not enough, Kota was further stung by the dismissive response she received from his family, who told her that It was because she was breastfeeding and that’s why Nyundo was seeing another girl.

“He would also beat me frequently and say right to my face that he was going to marry someone more beautiful than me,” she stated.

She also revealed that whenever they had an argument, her husband would insult her parents, making hurtful remarks about them.

“I loved him, but I can’t anymore,” she stated resolutely. “My interest is gone, and I want to move on with my life. I have endured enough pain and humiliation,” she said.

But Nyundo, responding to his wife’s accusations, denied all of her claims and instead accused Kota of mistreating his relatives whenever they visited.

“I have a young sister whom I keep in our home but my wife mistreats her. My sister is only in grade 4, yet Kota expects her to do all the housework before she goes to school,” he said.

He also alleged that she would deliberately waste food or withhold meals during their arguments in an attempt to punish him.

“I still love my wife and our relationship is like that of a phone and SIM card hence, I can’t do without her,” Nyundo affirmed.

During cross examination, Kota strongly defended her treatment of Nyundo’s mother, stating that she has never been unkind to her.

Despite that, she said she has always been the one taking care of her mother in law and taking her to the hospital whenever she’s ill.

Nyundo, however, remained unwavering in his assertion that Kota’s actions of caring for his mother were motivated by obligation rather than genuine concern as she just does it because she has to.

And presiding over the case, magistrate Harriet Mulenga questioned Nyundo’s validity of his claim to still love his wife given his earlier allegations that she had been mistreating his family.

Magistrate Mulenga declared that Nyundo’s testimony lacked credibility, going so far as to accuse him of fabricating statements and distorting the truth in an attempt to evade responsibility and shift blame onto his wife,

“Divorce is hereby granted and the court has ordered that Kota must be awarded K5000 as compensation, and the custody of your ten-month-old child will be granted to her. Nyundo must pay K750 per month for child maintenance, subject to review as needed,” she ruled.
