MINISTRY of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana has revealed that President Hakainde Hichilema’s son, Habwela Hichilema, undertook his Zambia National Service (ZNS) training under a different name in order to mitigate the risk of any potential preferential treatment from his instructors.

Kawana asserted that lieutenant Hichilema lived as an ordinary cadet throughout his training, sharing meals, dormitories and engaging in bush exercises alongside his peers.
He underscored that Habwela’s placement in the military unit was rooted in his own individual merit and dedication to the rigorous selection process, rather than nepotism or any other form of favoritism.
Kawana added that the First Son faced each phase of the demanding Officers Selection Board, demonstrating his aptitude and fitness for duty.
The permanent secretary was speaking this morning during a joint press briefing with ZNS.

“To ensure that he received impartial training and treatment like any other cadet, Lt. Hichilema trained under a different name. It is understandable that instructors could be intimated by the prospect of training the son of the Commander-in-Chief. Therefore, the use of a different name was a necessary measure to safeguard fairness in the training process,” Kawana revealed.
“Lt. Hichilema underwent disciplinary measures like his colleagues when necessary, ensuring fairness in the training process. He resided in cubic accommodations with three other officer cadets, blending seamlessly into the daily routines and rigor of the training programme.”
Kawana stated that throughout his military training, Habwela impressed those around him with his humble attitude, diligent work ethic and determination to succeed despite the demanding challenges he faced.
The Permanent Secretary emphasised that the young Hichilema never exploited his presidential connection for special treatment or privileges, instead earning the respect of his instructors and fellow cadets through his perseverance and hard work.
Kawana also disclosed that the President’s son maintained his anonymity throughout his training and only revealed his identity upon commissioning.
And ZNS chief of public relations, Brigadier General Mable Nyone commended Habwela for his outstanding character, emphasising the First Family’s success in raising such a fine young officer.
Brig Gen Nyone affirmed that Lt. Hichilema’s achievements, including his military ranks and insignia, were a direct result of his hardwork, determination, and unwavering resilience throughout his training, reflecting the exemplary qualities that serve as the cornerstone of a distinguished military career.
“We ask that his choice be treated with the utmost respect, recognising his passion and commitment to defending Zambia and its people,” added Brig Gen Nyone.
