As a result of Christopher Chafunga’s actions, the family of the girls is now divided and at loggerheads.

The details of how the 25-year old got the two women of the same family pregnant were laid bare to a shocked Chelston Local Court in Lusaka yesterday where he had been sued for damaging and causing pregnancy to the two ladies and failing to pay dowry for one of them.

According to Bright Sianyekela, uncle of the two ladies, Chafunga had first impregnated Cheerful Hanyuma back in 2017 when she was just a teenager, subsequently causing her to drop out of school.

At the time, Chafunga readily admitted guilt and offered to marry the girl upon which he was charged for damage and dowry.

After paying K4000 from the K15,000 he was charged, Chifunga started staying with the girl.

A year or two down the line, the couple was joined by the wife’s young female cousin, Lilian Sianyekela to help with household chores.

And unbeknownst to her, Chifunga had turned the young visiting girl into his secret wife and started having sex with her until she became pregnant.

Now, the girl, aged 19 has a 9-month old baby while Chifunga’s wife also recently delivered her second child with him.

In court yesterday, Chifunga readily admitted to making the two cousins pregnant but with the demeanor of a man who had just shaken hands with two different church members.

Uncle of the girls, Sianyekela from Mtendere East, complained that Chifunga’s conduct had brought shame, confusion and division in his family.

Sianyekela lamented to the Chelston Local court that Cheerful’s mother keeps accusing Lilian’s father of intentionally sending her daughter to destroy her cousin’s marriage.

He said it was disappointing that despite not having fully paid the K15,000 damage and dowry of his wife, Chifunga went on to make her cousin pregnant.

Sianyekela demanded that Chifunga pays the balance of the damage and bride price as well as an extra K25,000 for causing his other niece pregnant.

But in his defense, Chafunga pleaded for patience from the court and Sianyekela, citing his struggling farming business and the current financial challenges he is facing.

Chafunga requested that the court grant him additional time to come up with the remaining funds as he emphasized his willingness to comply with the court’s orders despite his current predicament.

And presiding over the matter, senior court magistrate, Charity Milambo advised Chafunga to direct his energies towards his agricultural pursuits rather than engaging in extramarital affairs.

“I order you to meet the financial obligations set forth by this court in full and without delay and all payments must be made through the court on the dates that have been specified. You must show that you are willing to accept responsibility for your actions and make amends,” she declared.

Magistrate Milambo also counseled Cheerful with empathy, urging her to forgive her cousin and to look past the hurt and betrayal she felt at her husband’s actions.

She also urged Lilian to apologize to her cousin for the betrayal as apologizing is the medicine that will help restore peace in their family.
