‘Businesswoman’ swindles 18 out of K60,000 in fake army job scheme

A LUSAKA businesswoman has pleaded not guilty to 18 counts of obtaining money by false pretenses after allegedly swindling individuals out of over K60,000 with promises of employment in the Zambia Army.

Selina Moyo, 26, of Zingalume compound, appeared before Lusaka Resident Magistrate Amy Masoja Chilangwa yesterday, accused of defrauding 18 people of sums ranging from K2,000 to K20,000 between May 16 and June 30, 2024, by falsely claiming to offer jobs within the military.

During the court proceedings, state witness Davis Hachitapita, 39, a human resources officer at Zambia Army, Arakan Barracks, testified that Moyo is not an employee of the army and that the army’s recruitment process involves no payments.

Hachitapita further stated that in October 2024, he was presented with recruitment forms by investigators and military police.

He identified the forms as fraudulent, noting they differed significantly from official Zambia Army documents.

The fake applications lacked proper classification and prescribed codes, and the signatures on them did not belong to any Zambia Army officers.

“Without all these features I knew that the form didn’t belong to Zambia Army.”

“I was informed that this form was used by a lady to recruit people. I checked for the name in the registry and we didn’t have such a name in the system and my conclusion was that this person did not belong to the Zambia Army and was not an employee,” he said.

The case has been adjourned to August 1, 2025, for the continuation of the trial.
