ZRA spoils smugglers’ party, seizes alcohol hidden under kapenta, rice

A TRUCK that was declared to be carrying rice and kapenta from Nakonde to Lusaka turned out to be hiding boxes of alcohol and other assorted goods, the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has revealed.

After traveling over 1100km from Nakonde to Kapiri Mposhi, the suspected smugglers were caught just 185km away from their intended destination of Lusaka.

A routine inspection revealed that the seemingly safe cargo of Kapenta and rice had been meticulously disguised to conceal alcohol and other contraband goods, resulting in a substantial loss of revenue for the country.

According to ZRA corporate communications manager Oliver Nzala, the authority’s eagle-eyed officers, lifted by their high spirits and alertness successfully uncovered the concealed alcohol and other goods beneath the seemingly safe cargo of rice and kapenta.

In addition, Nzala further disclosed that another truck, seemingly transporting shoes, was found to have concealed alcohol, thus bringing to light yet another attempted smuggling incident, this time in the same region of Kapiri Mposhi.

“With the value of the seized goods totaling K750,000 in potential revenue loss, the magnitude of the threat posed by the smuggling activities becomes strikingly evident, highlighting the importance of ZRA’s tireless efforts to combat such illicit practices,” Nzala stated.

He highlighted that these incidences serve as a stark reminder of the persistent problem of smuggling and tax evasion in Zambia, issues that continue to threaten the country’s revenue streams.

The authority emphasised that it has been intensifying its efforts to prevent smuggling by deploying additional resources, such as increased manpower and surveillance technology, to various entry points, particularly in areas prone to smuggling activities due to their proximity to neighboring countries.

Nzala underscored the pivotal role played by public participation in the fight against smuggling, encouraging citizens to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities they may encounter.

“This collective approach aims to create a culture of accountability and integrity within the Zambian society, ensuring that smuggling and tax evasion are effectively stopped,” added Nzala.
