Labour PS surprises intern with job during workshop

WHAT started as an opportunity to gain experience  for young lawyer, Mubiana Lukela, has blossomed into a full-time position after the Ministry of Labour and Social Security surprised him with the news of his employment while he was participating in a workshop today.

Ministry of Labour and Social Security Zacharia Luhanga, stood up, went to the  podium and as per custom everyone expected him to deliver his speech and introduce Minister Brenda Tambatamba during the International Labour Organisation’s Capacity Building Workshop

But while eyes were focused on him and ears widened like satellite dishes ready to connect to the frequency, Cheers and and chants filled the room immediately the Permanent Secretary pointed at Lukela, giving him a full time job at the ministry.

All the eyes quickly shifted from Luhanga to 26 year old Lukela, who struggled to either go down because of the overwhelming attention or jump up for joy because of the news but he struck a balance and kept it humble.

“Our intern who is seated there has already been appointed by the government of Zambia,” Luhanga stated, commending Lukela’s very rich curriculum vitae which led to his initial engagement as an intern and subsequent recommendation for a permanent role without hesitation.

For Lukela, a young lawyer with a Masters in employment law and alternative dispute resolution, the news was overwhelming.

“it has been a good opportunity to learn and showcase my skills and contribute to the labour market,” he told Kalemba.

“Fortunately, I just got news that I have been appointed as an officer of the government,” he shared, still processing the announcement.

He expressed gratitude to the government and the Ministry, highlighting their initiative to engage unemployed youth and contribute to national productivity through skills-based training.

Lukela’s passion for labour law isn’t just academic; it’s deeply personal.

“Growing up, going to school, my father used to pass through the industrial area and looking at how the Zambian employees would be treated,” he recounted.

Witnessing the struggles of workers in informal sectors ignited a lifelong calling to advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves, ultimately aiming to contribute to Zambia’s GDP.

When asked about the “secret ingredient” to his success, Mubiana emphasised hard work and determination.

“All I can say is grace..Obviously, you put in your work, put in your best, do everything like it’s your last day,” he advised.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labour has encouraged other ministries to take in interns.

“I want to report that as a Minister of Labour and Social Security, and thanks to the Labour Commissioner, we have a good number of interns.”

“I want to appeal to other ministries to also take note of these interns, so that we, as we await that legal framework, we should be able to keep them busy and help them,” Luhanga said.

He told Kalemba that the ministry has so far offered full-time employment to three of its 15 interns, signaling a commitment to youth empowerment and skills development within government.
