THE Zambia National Service (ZNS) has imported 520,000 bags of genetically modified organism (GMO) mealie meal for export to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Defense Minister Ambrose Lufuma confirmed the imports, which began in May 2023, are intended to mitigate Zambia’s domestic mealie meal shortage.

The mealie meal is sourced from South Africa and transported through Zambia solely for export to the DRC.

“We are continuing with the importation of mealie meal straight from South Africa. This is GMO mealie meal transiting through Zambia to the boarder for the Democratic Republic of Congo market,” Lufuma said.

“This will assist us in mitigating the shortage of mealie meal we have on our market.”

This approach aims to address Zambia’s mealie meal shortage while facilitating regional trade.
