INTERVENTIONS to mitigate the current drought effects have been enhanced as Agriculture Minister Mtolo Phiri announced the importation of 650,000 metric tonnes of maize.

Phiri said Government met with possible suppliers last week and it is just waiting to conclude importation agreements so at to commence the process.

The imports will be staggered to meet immediate needs effectively, with the maize likely be sourced from South Africa and some East African countries.

Phiri said the Ministry of Agriculture is collaborating with the Ministries of Commerce and Finance to ensure the smooth import of the maize.

“A very important aspect of food security is availability,” Mtolo emphasised. “We will ensure maize is available in the country.”

He acknowledged affordability as another concern but prioritised immediate availability.

“Other factors will come in like affordability but first the food should be available which is why we are working with other ministries like Finance and Commerce by looking to bring in 650,000 metric tonnes of maize.”

“The Food Reserve Agency (FRA) is committed to distributing maize to drought-affected areas,” Mtolo added.

FRA Director Mwansa Chamatete confirmed identifying households eligible to buy a subsidised 50kg bag of maize per month at K330.

This initiative aims to strengthen Zambia’s food security in the face of the drought.
