MINES and Mineral Development minister Paul Kabuswe has pledged to improve working conditions at Mopani Copper Mine (MCM) following reports of poor service conditions.
“We are very much aware of the poor conditions of service,” Kabuswe stated at a press briefing. “We understand the cry of miners and suppliers at MCM.”
The Minister emphasised the government’s commitment to resolving the situation.
He stressed the critical role of employees as essential components of Zambia’s workforce.
Kabuswe disclosed that negotiations between unions, management, and the government were underway to address worker grievances.
“It may not happen overnight, but the conditions will be improved,” Kabuswe assured. “Immediate action is already underway.”
Kabuswe also mentioned that the reopening of Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) would present an opportunity to further improve worker welfare in the mining sector.
Looking ahead, Kabuswe emphasised that the reopening of Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), will provide an opportunity to address the plight of employees.
“Even when KCM opens, they will touch on the workers’ plight,” said Kabuswe.
