Horseman CEO calls for predictable taxation to support MSMEs

Ghanaian entrepreneur and founder of Horseman, a leather product manufacturing company, Tonyi Senayah, has called on African leaders to be deliberate in their support towards entrepreneurship development.

Senayah bemoaned the reluctance of successive governments across the continent to continue building on policies and programs that benefit youth and women-led businesses principally.

He admitted that while strong policies and programs exist across the continent, they are usually tied to the tenure of governments, leading to their discontinuation once the term of office ends. This, he explained, to be one of the reasons for unsuccessful and unsustainable youth-led businesses.

Senayah further implored African leaders to provide predictable oversight on matters such as taxation, which continually threaten the growth of MSMEs.

He also encouraged young people to remain relentless in growing their businesses because businesses traverse tough seasons, but tenacity will see them through.

In his presentation at the 2023 Mwanakazi Okongola Summit held recently in Lusaka, Senayah stated that Africa has many opportunities; however, not much has been made of these, especially by the youth. According to him, “…what is lacking is the deliberateness of sustainable policies and plans to create and support the exponential growth of businesses”.

As part of the solutions to the challenges of entrepreneurship and the seeming lack of interest by the youth, Mr. Senayah suggested that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), be considered an area of focus for governments. This he believes has the potential to considerably solve the unemployment crisis the continent is facing, and help build the flailing economies.

“Allow me to commend the Zambian government for supporting trade schools through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) bursaries that are enabling young people to train in various vocational courses. Vocational skills will help Zambia enhance job creation opportunities,” … said Mr. Senayah.

Other speakers at the 2023 Mwanakazi Okongola Summit included: Sonny Zulu, the CEO of Standard Chartered, Zambia, Gail Mabalane, South African Actress, Business Strategist Panji Kakube and Financial Coach Lyapa Mbewe.
