Hichilema reasures free, fair elections, says polls should strengthen unity not conflict

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has reiterated that this year’s general elections must be conducted in a free, fair and credible manner, bringing people together and not lead to conflict.

Speaking during the Easter Celebration Church Service at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka yesterday, President Hichilema said the upcoming polls were key to sustaining peace and stability in the country.

The Head of State noted that elections should not be a source of conflict but an opportunity to strengthen democracy and national unity.

“I want to simply confirm where I stand, that the August 13 elections have to be free, fair and credible. They have to be another building block towards a stable nation,” President Hichilema said.

The President warned that conflict during elections have far-reaching consequences, affecting not only those involved but the entire nation.

“We should choose peace over conflict, unity over division and inclusion over exclusion,” he said.

President Hichilema urged citizens to remain peaceful and prioritise unity as the country heads towards the polls.

The Head of State reiterated that national unity was critical in ensuring a stable and progressive Zambia.
