Chipata trader’s sharp eyes prevents him from losing K500 from counterfeiter

A 34-year-old man of Munga Compound in Chipata has now been subjected to an orchestra of mosquitoes buzzing in his ears, as the insects make a meal of his flesh behind bars after police arrested him over counterfeit notes.

According to sources, Julius Banda almost made a steal of K450 and pork worth K50 after using a K500 fake note to buy the meat at Saturday market.

However, Felix Samwenda, the 23 year old trader of Mchini Compound in Mtenguleni Village, who seems to have been following the Bank of Zambia’s literature on identifying original notes, spotted the fake money in time.

This occurred around 18:09 hours on Saturday and was reported later that evening at Chipata Central Police Station.

Samwenda reportedly gave the suspect K450 in change before noticing that the banknote appeared different from genuine currency.

Samwenda told the police that he became suspicious as he was about to pocket the money.

After examining the note closely and consulting a fellow trader, the two concluded that the banknote was counterfeit.

By that time, the suspect had already left, but the traders began searching for the man and later apprehended him near Chipata College of Education.

“He was later taken to Chipata Central Police Station where another note was found on him,” Eastern Province police commanding officer Robertson Mweemba revealed.

Police opened a case docket and formally arrested the suspect, who remains in custody as investigations continue.
