Women come to Dr Sibanda’s defence

SEVERAL women have come forward to defend Lusaka based gynaecologist Dr Reward Sibanda, who is currently at the centre of serious allegations of professional misconduct.

Earlier today, Kalemba reported that Dr Sibanda, a Gynaecologist at Pearl of Health Hospital in Lusaka’s Rhodes Park, had been accused by a 31 year old Lusaka woman Alice Makina of attempting to coerce her into a sexual relationship during a medical appointment.

According to a demand letter from LM Chikuta Legal Practitioners, the alleged incident occurred during a scheduled intrauterine device (IUD) insertion procedure.

The complainant claims that Dr Sibanda expressed romantic interest in her, made inappropriate remarks and engaged in non-consensual physical contact.

She further alleged that the doctor removed the wrapper meant to cover her during the procedure which left her exposed.

According to the documents, when Alice resisted, the doctor allegedly reassured her that she should not fear pregnancy because he had undergone a vasectomy.

“He touched and rubbed my clitoris up and down without my consent, inducing a state of tonic immobility,” she alleged in the letter.

Her lawyers are since demanding K3.5 million in compensation from the hospital and the doctor for trauma, mental anguish and other damages.

However, the allegations have sparked mixed reactions from the public with several women who claim to have been attended to by Dr Sibanda defending him and describing him as professional.

One of the women Miyoba Sampule said her experience with the doctor during pregnancy was positive.

“Oh wow, the first of this kind. Talk of hard workers and his name comes among them. During my first pregnancy he carried me through and could laugh with me so often. May God bring to light the truth,” said Sampule.

Another reader Bwalya Chalikulima shared that she had been attended to by the doctor during both of her pregnancies and his conduct was always professional.

“This gynaecologist saw me during antenatal visits throughout my two pregnancies and deliveries. I never encountered anything suspicious. Dr Sibanda is an upright man, this does not add up.”

Melody Miyoba, who also claimed to have been treated by the doctor, said she found the accusations difficult to believe because of her long history with him as a patient.

“Dr Reward has been my gynaecologist from my antenatal visits to the operating table in near-to-death experiences for my complicated pregnancies. Seeing this, I find it hard to believe because he is a very professional doctor who has helped many women and has been in this field for a long time.”

She added that he was highly sought after by patients.

“Truth be told, this doctor is a top one and knows his job best such that his sessions are always packed. But all in all, only God knows the truth and surely He shall vindicate the innocent,” she said.

Another woman Karen Namata credited the doctor with saving her child’s life.

“He saved my son’s life. A very professional gynaecologist, humble, dedicated and caring for his patients in a professional way. That’s all I can say. May the truth and justice prevail.”

Others shared similar views in support of the doctor.

“May justice prevail. He’s the doctor who operated on me in 2024 for an ovarian cyst and he was kind and very professional,” wrote another reader.

“Awe, my gynaecologist all the way. He delivered both of my kids via C-section. Very patient doctor. I would be lying if I said he ever tried to do something,” said Annie Nkhata.

The complaint has reportedly been submitted to the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) and the Zambia Medical Association (ZMA).

HPCZ confirmed receiving the complaint but did not provide details on how far the matter has progressed.

Meanwhile, attempts by Kalemba to obtain a response from Dr Sibanda were unsuccessful as he did not respond to phone calls, WhatsApp messages or SMS sent to him seeking comment on the allegations.
