Southern Province police commanding officer Moono Namalongo identified the deceased as Mavis Hamachila, aged 31, of Mawaya Compound under Chief Sipatunyana.

Namalongo said Hamachila lost her husband on June 16, 2025 and from that time, she struggled to accept his death.

Her favourite song became one whose lyrics spoke about taking one’s own life on several occasions.

In a statement, Namalongo said on the fateful day, Hamachila called a friend who lives about 600 metres away.

The friend visited her twice and during both visits, the deceased repeatedly spoke about ending her life.

And the friend advised the deceased against those thoughts before she later returned home.

Concerned by the deceased’s remarks, the friend decided to go back later on Sunday where she found Hamachila unconscious on the verandah, with foam coming from her mouth and nose.

The friend then alerted Hamachila’s mother and the two rushed her to Zimba Mission Hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police stated that it received the report yesterday around 07:00 hours, from the deceased’s mother, Dorika Mutema, aged 64.

The incident occurred on Sunday around 23:00 hours, at Mawaya Compound.

“Police officers visited the scene and inspected the house but found nothing suspicious. They later proceeded to the hospital, where the body was examined.”

“No physical injuries were observed apart from white foam mixed with blood coming from the mouth and nose. The body has since been deposited in Zimba Mission Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem examination. There is no suspected foul play at this stage,” said the commanding officer.
