CELEBRATING EVELYN LYAINGA: A woman growing communities and harvesting change in Chongwe

AS Zambia began the 21 Days of Gender Activism, Chongwe Municipal Council has taken a moment to honor women who inspire, lead, and create lasting impact in their communities.

Evelyn Lyainga, an Assistant Town Planner at Chongwe Municipal Council, a mother, a baker and proprietor of Evelyn’s Cakery, hairdresser, and a passionate, seasoned farmer, has been recognized as one of outstanding women.

Evelyn’s story is a powerful reminder that women can shape the world in more ways than one.

By day, she helps guide Chongwe’s growth, planning land use, supporting community development and ensuring that the town’s future is well-structured and sustainable.

Her work makes it possible for families to live in organized, safe and thriving spaces.

But her impact does not end at the office door.

Beyond her professional role, Ms Lyainga puts on her boots and heads to the field, where she tends to her farm with the same dedication she brings to her planning work.

As a farmer, she understands the power of the land, the value of hard work and the importance of feeding communities. She’s proof that women can excel in technical fields while also thriving in agriculture, an industry often dominated by men.

Evelyn’s journey shows that women are not limited by titles or expectations. They can build cities and grow crops. They can design communities and nurture families. They can lead, inspire and transform.

As the country kicks off this year’s gender activism campaign, Chongwe Municipal Council celebrates Evelyn Lyainga, a planner, a farmer and a woman who shows that progress grows where passion is planted.

Here’s to day 1 of 21 days of raising our voices, uplifting women, and recognizing everyday champions like her!
