Zambia needs unity more than confrontation,GODAZA calls for demonstrations cancellation

GOVERNANCE and Development Advocates Zambia (GODAZA) has appealed to the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) and the Oasis Forum to cancel their planned peaceful demonstrations and instead accept President Hakainde Hichilema’s invitation for dialogue over the ongoing constitutional amendment process.

GODAZA executive director Elias Mulenga said the country stands at a sensitive moment and needs unity more than confrontation.

He urged church leaders and civil society representatives to seize the opportunity for constructive engagement at State House rather than taking to the streets.

Mulenga stated that while organisations may hold different views about the constitutional reforms, demonstrations risk heightening tensions at a time when the country needs calm.

He noted that the President’s call for roundtable discussions shows willingness to listen and negotiate.

“We believe that dialogue and negotiation are more effective than public protests, which may inadvertently create tension,” Mulenga stated in the letter.

He further explained that accepting the President’s invitation would not only promote national unity but also ensure that concerns from the Church, CSOs and citizens are included in the constitutional review process.

According to GODAZA, the platform offered by the presidency presents a better chance to influence the process meaningfully.
