THE Patriotic Front has once again pushed back its much-anticipated elective general conference.
Party presidential hopeful Makebi Zulu who has assumed the role of a spokesperson once again, announced that the November 29 gathering will not proceed as earlier planned as the troubled opposition party needs to cool down the internal political temperature.
Zulu, speaking on behalf of all aspiring candidates under the Given Lubinda-led faction, said the contestants themselves had agreed that the atmosphere in the party was too fractured to hold a meaningful convention and had instead resolved to first mend internal cracks before stepping into the ballot ring.
The meeting, which brought together PF presidential aspirants and senior party elders, was held under the watchful eye of some of the party’s last remaining grey hairs, former vice-president Inonge Wina and former PF national chairperson Ng’onga Mukupa.
According to Zulu, the elders urged the aspirants to put out internal fires before stepping forward to seek public trust.
The hopefuls were told, that a divided PF could not hold a credible conference nor present a united face to its supporters.
He explained that after the roundtable discussions, the group unanimously agreed to recommend to the PF Central Committee that the general conference be moved to a later date to allow continued dialogue and reconciliation among rival camps.
“We resolved to propose to the Central Committee that the convention be postponed to a later date so that we can continue engaging and fostering oneness,” Makebi Zulu said.
He said the final decision now lies with the Central Committee, which is expected to deliberate on a new date for the long-delayed elective gathering.
