Improper overtaking kills 8, 1 left fighting for life

A DISTURBING road accident has claimed eight lives and left one man fighting for his life on the Great North Road in Chibombo, opposite the China Jiangxi Economic Zone.

Shattered glass and scattered vehicle parts greeted early morning travellers as a Nissan Caravan minibus, registration AJG 1180ZM, carrying six passengers, collided head on with a Hino Ranger truck, registration ABT 5624, carrying a driver and one passenger around 03:00 hours.

All six passengers and the driver of the minibus died instantly, along with the truck driver.

The lone passenger in the Hino Ranger survived but sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Liteta Hospital.

Police investigations indicate thst the accident occurred when the Caravan driver attempted an improper overtaking manoeuvre.

The bodies of the deceased which were taken to the fully packed Liteta District Hospital mortuary, have since been transferred to Kabwe Central Hospital mortuary pending identification and postmortems.

According to an eye witness, the impact was so severe that the two vehicles had to be detached by the fire brigade, who rushed to the scene with heavy-duty equipment.

Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi confirmed the incident and warned road users to be careful.

“The Zambia Police Service urges all road users to exercise maximum caution, adhere strictly to traffic regulations and refrain from dangerous behaviours such as improper overtaking,” he stated.
