CHIEF government spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa says government takes no pleasure in witnessing the internal turmoil currently engulfing the Patriotic Front, stressing that political stability in opposition parties is essential for the health of the nation’s democracy.
Mweetwa said government sympathises with the widening wrangles and growing divisions, tearing through the former ruling party.
Speaking when he addressed journalists yesterday, Mweetwa noted that currently, Zambians do not celebrate the misfortune of others, emphasising that political differences should never overshadow national values.
“No Zambian enjoys seeing a neighbor’s house in flames. We are not happy with what is happening because the PF form an integral part of the democratic fabric,” he said.
He underscored that the PF remains the largest opposition party represented in Parliament and as such, its stability is important to maintain constructive checks and balances in governance.
He clarified that PF should not be viewed as government’s political enemies but rather as legitimate competitors in a democratic space.
“We wish them stability because democracy is our bloodline. A functioning opposition strengthens accountability and reinforces the nation’s democratic credentials.
Mweetwa further urged PF members to prioritise unity and resolve their differences in the interest of the country’s political maturity.
