GOVERNMENT has clarified that claims suggesting it has ended its maize export arrangement with Malawi are false and misleading.
Chief government spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa said a fabricated letter allegedly signed by Foreign Affairs Minister Mulambo Haimbe, as well as a counterfeit article attributed to a named tabloid, were spreading misinformation.
“These reports are completely unfounded and were created to mislead the public. The maize trade between Zambia and Malawi is ongoing, and both countries continue to cooperate closely,” Mweetwa stated.
He noted that decisions on maize sales fall under the Ministry of Agriculture, not foreign affairs, and urged citizens to verify information before accepting or sharing it online.
“We advise the public to be cautious with social media content. Spreading false information is punishable under Zambian law, and those responsible will face consequences,” Mweetwa added.
Mweetwa further reiterated government’s commitment to regional cooperation and food security, emphasising that Zambia’s partnership with Malawi remains stable.
