Kopala highest in voter registration, followed by Southern Province

COPPERBELT Province has recorded the highest number of new voters, with 121,261 registrations out of the 758,251 new registrations captured across all ten provinces during the last five phases of the voter registration exercise.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday, Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Chief Electoral Officer, Brown Kasaro, revealed that a total of 758,251 newly registered voters had been recorded, with Copperbelt Province leading at 121,261, followed by Southern Province with 99,064.

Eastern Province ranked third with 90,240 new voters, followed by Western Province with 79,919, Lusaka Province with 73,733, and Central Province with 73,558.

Other provinces such as Luapula recorded 71,245 new voters, North-Western Province had 59,771, Northern Province came second to last with 52,206, while Muchinga Province recorded the lowest number at 37,274.

Kasaro further disclosed that the total number of transfers and replacements across all ten provinces stood at 881,206, with Copperbelt Province still in the lead at 122,405 registrations, followed by Southern Province with 180,449, and Eastern Province in third place with 120,437.

Luapula Province recorded 95,100, Northern Province had 84,156, and Lusaka Province recorded 79,588.

Western Province had 76,142, Central Province recorded 69,573, and North-Western Province had 65,583, while Muchinga Province recorded the lowest updates at 49,773 registered voters.

Kasaro stated that the aggregate number of registrations recorded in the last five phases stood at 1,639,457, reflecting a positive response from the general public towards ECZ’s voter registration efforts.

The combined total registrations for each province still place Copperbelt Province in the lead with 243,666 registrations, followed by Southern Province with 217,513, and Eastern Province with 210,677.

Luapula Province recorded a combined total of 166,345, followed by Western Province with 156,061, Lusaka Province with 153,351, Central Province with 143,111, Northern Province with 136,362, North-Western Province with 125,354, and Muchinga Province with the lowest total at 87,047, bringing the national total to 1,639,457.

Kasaro said the ECZ is impressed with the high turnout from members of the public and assured that the Commission will continue to provide updates on the progress of the exercise.

“We will later update the nation on the progress made in phase six after the extension is concluded,” assured Kasaro.
