Stop politicising mourning – Simuuwe tells Makebi

THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has criticised lawyer Makebi Zulu for his repeated comments on President Hakainde Hichilema’s possible attendance at the funeral of former president Edgar Lungu, describing his behaviour as insensitive during a national period of grief.

UPND media director Mark Simuuwe accused Zulu of attempting to politicise a solemn occasion, warning that such actions, undermine unity and respect at a time when the nation should be mourning together.

“This is not the time for politics. It is disrespectful to use a State Funeral to score political points,” Simuuwe said.

He stressed that once a funeral is declared a State funeral, the sitting president has a constitutional duty to attend, representing the nation’s solidarity and continuity.

According to Simuuwe, questioning that role reveals either a lack of understanding or a deliberate attempt to stir division.

He further accused Zulu of inconsistency and hypocrisy, noting that while he often speaks about unity and reconciliation, his recent comments show the opposite.

“Zulu’s conduct does not reflect leadership or maturity. True leaders build bridges, they don’t exploit moments of loss to advance political interests,” he added.

Simuuwe also clarified that the UPND’s remarks are not directed at the former first family, who continue to receive the party’s sympathy and respect, but solely at Zulu’s careless political commentary.

He urged Zambians to set politics aside and use this moment to honour president Lungu with dignity and national solidarity, reminding citizens that unity should guide the nation above all else.

“Let us mourn with respect, not rivalry. The UPND stands for peace, tolerance, and a Zambia that comes together in both sorrow and strength.
