IK Charitable Trust gives water, wheelchairs, school supplies to people with disabilities

IT was a happy day full of smiles and songs in Chikupi Zone 14 of Kafue District on Thursday when IK Charitable Trust, a Lusaka-based charity group, handed over a new borehole, wheelchairs, bicycles and school supplies to members of the Margaret Edmund Care and Trust Organization for the Disabled.

For years, people living with disabilities in the Chikupi area have faced many challenges, walking long distances to fetch water, struggling with mobility and lacking access to basic resources.

But this week, all that changed when help finally arrived.

The new borehole, drilled in Mwakashika village, will provide clean and safe drinking water for members of the organization and the surrounding community.

The group also received wheelchairs for those with mobility difficulties, bicycles to make movement easier, hygiene materials and 50 school bags filled with pens, books and other items for children with disabilities.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Professor Richard Miti, who represented IK Charitable Trust, said the donation was part of the organization’s mission to support vulnerable communities across Zambia.

“This donation is a commitment to improving the lives of persons with disabilities. Every person deserves access to dignity, education, and health,” said Professor Miti.

IK Charitable Trust was founded in 2016 and has since been helping communities.

The Margaret Edmund Care and Trust Organization for the Disabled started in 2021 after community members in Chikupi conducted a survey to identify people living with disabilities and understand their challenges.

The organisation now has 78 members, including the elderly and those with physical disabilities.
