The independent lawmaker declared her candidacy during an online press briefing, positioning herself as a people-powered alternative to party-aligned leaders and calling for a nationwide movement of citizens.
“I’m officially declaring my intention to run for president of the Republic of Zambia in 2026 as an independent candidate,” Katuta announced.
She argued that the promise of the 2021 election has faded and that the country needs a leadership not tied to party agendas.
Katuta explained that the independent path she has taken is necessary because the political party system has devolved into a place of betrayal, confusion, and corruption.
“Zambia is not for sale. Zambia is not for political parties. Zambia is for Zambians,” she said.
The Chiengi lawmaker outlined a ten-point list of national crises she would confront as president, focusing heavily on economic hardship and public service failures.
Key issues cited include the high cost of living, youth unemployment, the growing national debt, the unstable Kwacha, and recurring power shortages, rampant corruption, failure of public services such as clinics lacking medicine among others.
Katuta made a direct appeal to women and the youth to rise from being cheerleaders to leaders.
“If we want to change Zambia, women must rise… not just to clap for men, not just to dance, but to lead from the front,” she stated.
