K1.6 million CDF shelter brings new hope to Kanyama marketeers

FROM selling in the scorching sun to finally having a roof over their heads, traders at Kanyama’s mobile market now have a new home worth K1.6 million funded by the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

The freshly constructed market shelter was handed over yesterday to residents of Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula Ward 12 in order to boost local entrepreneurship and small-scale trade.

Officiating at the event, Lusaka District Administrative Officer O’Nell Chiiya, who represented the District Commissioner Rosa Zulu, said the structure is more than just bricks and iron sheets as it is a symbol of transformation for one of Lusaka’s busiest constituencies.

Kanyama Member of Parliament Monty Chinkuli, who graced the handover, called the facility a community asset that would restore dignity to the traders. “This market is a gift to the people. It will provide a more dignified and organised space for business, especially for our local marketeers who form the backbone of our informal economy,” he said.

Ward 12 Councillor Aaron Mwanza, urged the community to safeguard the shelter by maintaining cleanliness and order, warning against vandalism.

For the traders who for years endured rain and poor sanitation, the new market shelter has brought a sigh of relief and provided comfort as they carry out their daily trading activities.
