The board received 22 applications from students with disabilities, and all 22 were approved.

The 22 are among the overall 2,145 first-year students at Mulungushi University who have been granted financial aid.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote higher education and remove financial barriers for vulnerable students.

HELSB’s corporate communications and customer services manager, Chiselwa Kawanda, emphasised that this decision aligns with the board’s mission to ensure equal opportunities for all.

Overall, HELSB received a total of 6,262 and after a rigorous review, 5,671 candidates were found to be eligible, while 591 were deemed ineligible.

“Some of the reasons cited for ineligibility included completion of Grade 12 before 2020, incomplete or incorrect documentation, exceeding the age limit of 26 years, and academic scores above 30 points,” she said.

The total acceptance rate for all students was roughly 90 percent, with a near-equal gender split: 1,114 male students (52 percent) and 1,031 female students (48 percent) received aid.
