The toddler, identified as Florence Chewe, is believed to have fallen into the shallow well while playing outside with a friend, just moments after her guardian had gone inside to clean the house.

According to Eastern Province police commissioner Robertson Mweemba, the incident happened yesterday, at around 10:15 hours, under Chief Mphamba’s area.

Initial investigations indicate that little Florence had been playing with a fellow toddler who had crossed over to the other side of the well.

She then tried to follow her a friend, leading to the the calamity.

It was a 13-year-old boy who noticed the child struggling in the water and ran to inform her aunt, Violet Phiri, who quickly rushed to the scene.

“The aunt quickly rushed to the shallow well and managed to retrieve the body of her niece, who was still alive,” Mweemba confirmed.

Florence was immediately rushed to Lundazi District Hospital, but sadly, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police say no injuries were observed on the body, which has since been deposited into the Lundazi District Hospital mortuary, awaiting post-mortem and burial.
