A CLOUD of grief hangs heavy over the Zambia Compound in Choma, Southern Province after a young woman, Esnart Daka aged 31, was allegedly beaten to death by her husband’s relatives.
The incident occurred on Saturday morning after her husband, Rodgers Chipango, passed away from a brief illness.
Daka, upon discovering her husband’s lifeless body, immediately informed his family. However, instead of shared mourning, she was met with brutal accusations and violence.
The family suspected Daka of hiding Chipango’s illness and subjected her to a vicious assault.
It is reported that the relatives later chased her from the funeral house, denying her the rights to mourn her husband, after unleashing punches, kicks and slaps on her.
Daka was only rescued by her mother, Rabecca Sakala aged 47 who came to her rescue after being alerted by some community members who informed her what was happening.
She managed to rescue her daughter but it was too late.
Daka started complaining of chest pains and back ache, and suddenly became very weak causing the mother to book a taxi, rushing her to Shampande Clinic for immediate medical attention.
However, Daka succumbed to her injuries later that evening.
The incident has been reported to the police by Daka’s uncle, Luckson Chikwenda (53).
Southern Province Police Commanding Officer, Auxensio Daka, confirmed the incident and stated that the matter was reported to police by the uncle to the deceased woman.
And post-mortem examination revealed that Daka died from head injuries sustained during the assault.
“We are still investigating the matter,” said Auxensio Daka. “No arrests have been made yet, but community members can assist in identifying the family members involved in the attack.”
