GERALD Kabinda capped off a phenomenal run for Zambia at the 2023 African Games, securing a gold medal in a thrilling men’s 67kg boxing final against Boniface Zengala of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Kabinda’s victory wasn’t just his own; it cemented Zambia’s most successful African Games performance ever!
According torl the National Olympic Committee, this gold medal propelled Zambia to a staggering 15 medals overall, placing them a remarkable 14th out of 53 participating nations.
The nation’s previous record at the African Games is now shattered.
Leading the charge were four Zambian champions who earned gold: Steven Mung’andu (Judo), Patrick Chinyemba (Boxing), the Men’s 4x400m Relay Team, and of course, Kabinda himself.
But the success wasn’t limited to gold. Zambia also secured a strong showing with five silver medals and six bronze medals across various disciplines.
Among the silver medalists were Muzala Samukonga (Athletics) and Mwengo Mwale (Boxing), showcasing Zambia’s strength in both track and ring.
Notably, Mia Phiri from swimming, doubled up on bronze medals, while others like Simon Zulu (Judo) and Margaret Tembo (Boxing) contributed to the impressive haul.
