PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says the Chipolopolo Boys must bring success to Zambia.
On Saturday, Zambia beat Ivory Coast 3 – 0 during a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON) Group H qualifier match at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
President Hichilema, who was in the Russian port city of St Petersburg, could not watch the match.
But thousands, including some ministers, were in the terraces to cheer the Lubambo Musonda-captained team.
The victory pushed the Chipolopolo Boys, coached by Israeli Avram Grant, to the summit of the group, with 12 points, two better than Ivory Coast.
Comoros, on the third spot, has six points while bottom-placed Lesotho has a point.
“We saw the celebrations of our people at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium. I saw my ministers jiving and everyone else,” President Hichilema, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) patron, told reporters upon arrival from Europe yesterday.
“Football is a unifying factor and we wish our boys and girls and other atheletes the best of luck. They must bring success to Zambia and take this country to where it belongs.”
