THOUSANDS of people were this evening left helpless and hopeless, as they watched 16 year old FC MUZA go down 2 – 0, at the hands of a more experienced Forest Rangers side at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka.
At the end of the 90 minutes plus four minutes of additional time, one could tell that the thousands in the terraces were more geared to see a MUZA victory, than otherwise.
But during play time, 48 year old Zambia Forestry and Forest Industries Corporation (ZAFFICO)-sponsored Forest Rangers of Ndola showed more zeal to win it, certainly for the first time.
And they did.
In the 15th minute, MUZA’s Chanda Chileshe kicked the ball into his own goal, beating goal minder Monga Ndala.
In the 63rd minute, Quadri Kola sent MUZA players and supporters into more despondency when he fired a shot past Ndala, making it 2 – 0.
From there onwards, FC MUZA tried to press for a goal but to no avail.
When the final whistle was blown, Forest Rangers ran around the pitch to celebrate their victory with a few of their fans cheering them.
On the contrary, downcast, MUZA players licked their wounds and thousands of their supporters were as sad, if not worse.
‘The Elegant Dynamites’ FC MUZA, sponsored by Keith Mweemba Advocates, has carved a success path for itself, emerging from the sugarcane-infested Mazabuka town, whose football record, at the highest level, can be tied only to the now defunct Nakambala Leopards Football Club.
President Hakainde Hichilema, Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts Elvis Nkandu and ABSA Zambia managing director Mizinga Melu were among the thousands in the stands, watching the 16th edition of the ABSA cup final.
The thousands made enough noise that is necessary to inspire a footballer on the pitch, and at the end of it all, it is Forest Rangers that pocketed the champion’s prize – K700, 000.
On the other hand, FC MUZA got K350, 000.
