MINISTER of Youth, Sport and Arts Elvis Nkandu has taken to social media to rally for Chipolopolo striker Fashion Sakala after the Rangers FC player received backlash from some fans who called him selfish on the pitch.
“We pride ourselves on your hard work and dedication to making every critical positive result. As always, we will continue counting on you and every other player to go the extra mile,” Nkandu posted on his Facebook page.
“Thank you for your continuous immense contributions to the team, Fashion Sakala jnr.”
Nkandu is not the only one who is giving Sakala support during this time as Zambian song bird, Wezi Mhone, and many others also posted on their pages to denounce the attitude of some fans whose hobby is to abuse others.
“Online abuse in Zambia continues to be a problem,” Wezi wrote.
“We see so many talented people being insulted by fans on a daily basis. I respect anyone who shares their concern about this, God knows it’s not easy to always sit in silence and just take all the hurtful things people say.”
She thanked Sakala for opening up about the backlash and encouraged him to stay strong.
Yesterday morning, Fashion Sakala expressed hi displeasure and disappointment at some fans who were booing him while they called him a selfish.
“Being called for National Team games has and will always be an honour to me. However this time it has been very difficult and by far the worst experience of my entire career,” he disclosed.
“Over the years I have endured the pain of being insulted endlessly by the Zambian fans for my style of playing, game after game. The game we had in South Africa on the 26th March 2023 was no different as I was brutally insulted, being called selfish etc by Zambian fans at the Stadium before the game started.”
“I am a winger. I am highly trained to dribble , cause threats to opponents and have as many touches as it profits the team to have more chances and I believe that’s why I have been playing successfully in Europe for 7 years,” Sakala added.
He said he will continue wearing the national jersey with pride but was disappointed at the Zambian fans for their vicious insults and endless booing directed at him, despite doing nothing but shown them his hard work, sacrifice, dedication and commitment to win games for the Chipolopolo.
