ZAMBIA Girls basketball coach Noah Mabutwe says he is happy with his team’s performance at the ongoing Region 5 Youth Games in Lilongwe.
Addressing the media after the cancellation of some games due to rain, Mabutwe said he was looking forward to the semi-final against either Malawi or South Africa.
He however said having beaten both countries in the group stages, he anticipates a good showing by his team.
“The team has done exceptionally well; at the moment we are going to the semi-final stage. Our current standing is that we are second on the log, the semi-final format we are going to play either Malawi or South Africa and those teams we have already played them in the groups and we beat both of them, so we anticipate a good showing in the semi-finals and hopefully after that we can play finals against Angola which is the strongest team at the moment,” Mabutwe said.
The Zambian coach said he has so far been impressed with his players’ performance for accounting themselves well having beaten Mozambique, the basketball power house not only in Southern Africa but the continent.
“For us to beat them at that stage after beating Zimbabwe and South Africa with only one loss in the group stages to Angola shows that we are on track,” he said.
Mabutwe said although most of his players are competing at such a stage for the first time, they were still capable of improving their performance.
He noted that his team lacked exposure as compared to Angola who have been a continental powerhouse.
Mabutwe however noted that his players have been improving with each game they have played.
