Zambia’s senior Copper Queens make football history

In July 2021, the Copper Queens participated at the Olympic games in Tokyo, Japan.
They played against Brazil, Netherlands and China.
But this time around, they have qualified to the Australia/New Zealand World Cup, following a 4 – 2 post-match penalty Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAfCON) quarter final victory over Senegal.
The match ended 1 all in the regulation 90 minutes and 30 minutes of extra time.
The Zambian ladies have now progressed into the WAfCON semi-final, earning themselves a historic 2023 World Cup qualification.
Before today’s victory against Senegal, the Copper Queens, in their Group B stage, drew 0 – 0 with Cameroon, beat Tunisia 1 – 0 and wrapped up with an emphatic 4 – 1 win over Togo.
The high-flying Copper Queens are coached by Bruce Mwape, the same man who was in charge of the team at last year’s Tokyo Olympic games.
Charity Nthala and Florence Mwila are the Copper Queens’ assistant coaches.
Facts about Women’s World Cup⚽
1. The FIFA Women’s World Cup was first held in China in 1991 and the trophy was won by the United States of America (USA).
2. In 1995, Sweden hosted the second edition and Norway won the trophy.
3. In 1999, the USA hosted the Women’s World Cup and went on to win the trophy.
4. In 2003, the USA hosted the Women’s World Cup again and Germany won the trophy.
5. In 2007, the fifth edition of the Women’s World Cup was held in China and Germany retained the championship.
6. In 2011, Germany hosted the tournament and Japan won the trophy.
7. In 2015, it was hosted by Canada and the USA won it for the third time.
8. In 2019, the Women’s World Cup was staged in France and the USA won it.
9. Australia and New Zealand will host it from July 20, 2023 to August 20, 2023.
*32 teams will participate in the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Zambia’s Copper Queens🇿🇲 will be among the 32 countries at the ninth edition of the Women’s World Cup⚽
This is the first time the senior Copper Queens has qualified to the World Cup.
However, the Under 17 Copper Queens qualified and participated at the March 2014 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.
