FORMER PF Chifunabuli Member of Parliament (MP) Ponde Mecha has called on Zambians to support President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership stating that the Head of State’s intentions of driving the Zambian economy are genuinely pure.

In an interview with Kalemba, Mecha stated that the President’s system approach is not about fixing things quickly but about gradually building a sustainable economic foundation that benefits all Zambians.

He encouraged Zambians that change takes time and history has shown that quick fixes and populist promises often lead to further economic decline and social instability.

“Instead of succumbing to the allure of untested or regressive leadership, Zambians must remain steadfast in their support for the ongoing reforms. Change takes time, and it is only through perseverance that the nation will achieve its development goals,” said Mecha.

He added that the current system of doing things in government recognises the interconnectedness of different sectors and seeks to address the root causes of challenges rather than their symptoms.

He said despite the country experiencing different economic challenges such as the drought, President Hichilema’s reforms are gradually unlocking opportunities for ordinary Zambians.

The former law maker is of the view that Zambians must bear with the President as he is still dealing with the mistakes of the past that were undertaken by the previous government.

“Zambia is at a critical juncture in its development journey. The nation is grappling with economic setbacks, many of which stem from historical mismanagement, global economic pressures, and the challenging transition to a systems-thinking approach under President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership.”

“Economic recovery is not instantaneous, especially when implementing systemic reforms to correct decades of inefficiencies. It is important for Zambians to understand that the current economic challenges are temporary and largely a result of the necessary restructuring,” said Mecha.

He explained that government is not working in isolation as efforts to stabilise the economy and attract investment are ongoing, with a focus on areas that will yield long term benefits such as infrastructure development, agriculture and energy.

“These reforms are designed to create a resilient economy that is less vulnerable to external shocks. As a former MP for Chifunabuli Constituency in Luapula Province who worked under the previous PF regime, I can attest to the genuineness of President Hichilema’s intentions regarding the economy,” he added.

“I fully support President Hichilema’s roadmap for economic recovery, as it lays the foundation for sustainable development.”

Mecha further commended government for the recent appointment of principal public relations personnel in all ministries and provinces.

He stated that the move is a step toward enhancing transparency and communication.

He however, advised the President to go further and appoint such personnel at the district level.

“Information dissemination mechanisms at the district level require streamlining to ensure that the benefits of President Hichilema’s economic management approach are effectively popularised,” urged Mecha.

“Let us not allow temporary hardships to derail our progress. Instead, let us rally behind the transformative policies being implemented and work together to build a future that benefits all Zambians, not just a privileged few.”
