CHIEF government spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa says former president Edgar Lungu wouldn’t have managed to address the current power deficit had he been president.

Mweetwa stated that President Hakainde Hichilema has managed to address the energy crisis in the country which would have not been the case if Lungu was the president during this time.

He boasted that even the European Union (EU)’s budget support to Zambia has been resumed owing to the confidence it has in President Hichilema.

Mweetwa who is also Information and Media minister said President Hichilema is ready to face any competitor in the 2026 general election given his leadership abilities.

This is in response to Lungu’s call to the President for a face off in the incoming general election.

He said the country’s democracy thrives on political competition and the leadership credentials that President Hichilema has makes him ready for any political competition.

“President Hakainde Hichilema is prepared to face any political competitor in 2026 given his leadership track record. Former president Lungu’s challenge is ill timed and misplaced. Every election has political competitors that’s the essence of our democracy.”

“The President cannot be scared of Mr. Lungu given his leadership abilities. If Mr. Lungu was still in office, the European Union wouldn’t have resumed supporting Zambia and even the former president himself knows that he wouldn’t have managed to address the power shortage in the manner that President Hichilema has done,” noted Mweetwa.
