THE head of Parliament in Germany Christoph Hoffman says the country is looking for strong and also stable partners and Zambia is well suitable as it has a very good reputation when it comes to human rights and political stability.
Dr Hoffman said this in Berlin in a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Stanley Kakubo.
Kakubo called for investment in various Zambian sectors such as agriculture, energy, tourism, and value addition on raw materials.
Minister Kakubo highlighted potential collaboration with Germany, stating, “One way Germany can partner with Zambia is to assist in promoting value addition. Zambia is home to many metals required in the battery value chain of electric vehicles. We have manganese, lithium, we have cobalt.”
He further explained Zambia’s aspirations, saying, “For instance, we know that you have a car manufacturing plant in Germany; we would like a similar one in Zambia.”
Minister Kakubo also discussed the prospect of a joint venture, stating, “Zambia is equal to the task in food production. There is a food deficit around the world, and Zambia pretty much has all the agronomic conditions required. What we need are joint ventures so that we should not only produce food for Zambia but globally because we are food-sufficient.”
Highlighting plans for irrigation, he stated, “That’s where Germany comes in; we want to construct huge dams so that we can conserve water so that we can irrigate. So that we can get more food.”
Dr. Hoffman acknowledged the interest of German entrepreneurs in Africa, stating, “We have many large business associations, and this is how we will support you to engage with them.”
He emphasized the influence of businesses on the German Government, stating, “One of the directions the businesses take is to influence the German Government, and the government emphasizes the business to have a strong focus on Africa. Then, the government will come up with public grants.”
