GOVERNMENT has warned politicians against perpetuating violence during and after the upcoming Pambashe and Petauke Central by-elections.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka today, Home Affairs and Internal Security minister Jack Mwiimbu stated that the Zambia Police Service is ready to deal with whoever will incite violence regardless of their political affiliation.
Mwiimbu said politicians are expected to adhere to the electoral code of conduct without reservations.
He said the country has been enjoying peaceful by-elections since the UPND took office and expects the tradition to continue.
“Government is ready and prepared to maintain peace during and after elections. We will do everything possible to ensure that law and order is maintained in the country,” said Mwiimbu.
“We won’t allow anyone to start violence. All political players in Pambashe and Petauke Central should refrain from acts of violence. Violence does not pay.”
The minister further debunked social media and politically related posts alleging that the Zambia Police Service and the UPND are partners in crime.
“The Zambia Police is an independent government department responsible for maintaining order and law in the country. It’s not a partner in crime with the UPND,” he clarified.
Mwiimbu also warned PEP leader Sean Tembo to refrain from inciting violence through his articles ahead of the elections.
He assured the public that government shall ensure that culprits are brought to book.
