Yesterday, parents and guardians of the suspended students pleaded for leniency from Education Minister, Douglas Syakalima on behave of their children acknowledging the mistakes they made during the violent July protests.

The July protests ignited by students concerns over poor water supply at the university, led to the destruction of property worth millions of kwacha.

However, following the riots the Copperbelt University management expelled some students but later reduced the sentence to 2 years suspension.

Speaking on behalf of the parents, Douglas Yowela said that the students had deeply reflected on their actions and learned valuable lessons on what they did.

“Our children have realised the gravity of their mistakes…they look to rebuild their academic futures,” he said.

Another parent, Buchisa Mwalongo, expressed regret over the incident and assured the Minister that parents had spoken to their children for the unacceptable behaviour.

“We have spoken to our children and ensured that they understand the consequences of their actions. They shall never repeat it,” Mwalongo said.

And in response, Syakalima acknowledged the sincerity of the parents’ appeal but warned against future misconduct, particularly acts of vandalism targeting public property.

“I have said that it is inhuman to resort to destroying public property that benefits you when you have a misunderstanding. It is for this reason that we have said anytime there is destruction of property by students we shall surcharge every student at the Institution,” The Minister said.

Syakalima further stated that he would engage relevant authorities to explore whether the suspended students could retain their bursaries as they serve their one-year suspension.
