HELSB gives out over 3000 student loans

THE Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board (HELSB) has awarded student loans to 3,752 first year students across the country for the 2024 to 2025 academic year.

At the University of Zambia (UNZA), 3,111 students have been awarded loans out of 5,861 applications received while 253 students have been awarded at Kapasa Makasa University (KMU).

388 Zambia University College of Technology
(ZUT) students have also been granted the key to success.

The board received 265 applications from KMU and 1,272 applications from ZUT respectively.

At UNZA, 14 applicants who are differently abled were gifted with loans while six applicants were awarded at ZUT.

According to the board’s corporate communications manager Chiselwa Kawanda, no applications from differently abled students were received from KMU.

“To ensure equitable access to education financing, HELSB applied the regional balancing eligibility ratio during the selection process,” said Kawanda.

Currently, HELSB is awarding student loans at 9 public university which are, Chalimbana University, Copperbelt University, Kapasa Makasa University, Kwame Nkrumah University, Mulungushi University, Mukuba University, Palabana University, University of Zambia and Zambia University College of Technology.
