THE poor showing of Manchester City, an off-colour English Premier League side in England has led to a murder in Lusaka, thousands of kilometres away from the team.
The team’s latest loss to city rivals, Manchester United on Sunday evening resulted in the tragic death of a 40-year-old man, a supporter of reds.
Beston Mwalubemba, a driver, succumbed to stab wounds after a fierce fight broke out at A1 Night Club, located opposite Novare Mall along Great North Road.
The deadly altercation followed Manchester City’s 2-1 loss to their city rivals, Manchester United.
Witnesses reported that the atmosphere was tense as the match ended, with jokes and camaraderie quickly turning into chaos. A Manchester City supporter, enraged by the loss, picked up a sharp object and stabbed Mwalubemba in the back of the head, killing him instantly.
Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, confirmed the incident, stating that the matter was reported to Emmasdale Police Station by the deceased’s cousin, Chrispin Chingwele.
The body has been deposited at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary, pending a postmortem examination.
The police have launched an investigation and are appealing to the public for assistance in arresting the culprits. “An inquiry file has been opened, and investigations are underway. We urge anyone with information regarding this matter to come forward and assist the police,” said Hamoonga.
The Zambia Police Service has assured the public that they are committed to ensuring justice for the victim and his family.
