Speaking on her arrival in New York, Kasune said this will be the 10th time the UN will be voting on this issue, with more countries supporting it.

Kasune said that this temporary stop is to pause the death penalty, especially in countries where it’s still legal.

“Zambia will be voting in favour of the Moratorium Against the Death Penalty on 17th December 2024 at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States of America” Kasune said.

‘It is an actual suspension of the use of death sentence in sentencing by the courts. In the case of Zambia, His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema signed into law the abolition of the death penalty [therefore] we shall be voting for the moratorium against the death penalty because Zambia is a pro-life state.”

She said Zambia respects human rights and the right to life.

In addition to her participation in the UN General Assembly, Minister Kasune will officially sign documents to join the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
