ZESCO has been forced to implement emergency load shedding measures due to a significant reduction in power imports from Mozambique.
The utility stated in a statement that it has lost approximately 300 megawatts, as a result of the unforeseen shutdown of several power generating facilities in Mozambique.
“In view of this unfortunate development, ZESCO has instituted emergency load
management measures that have affected the supply of the scheduled 7 hours of
power supply to its residential customers until the situation normalises.,” the statement read.
This development has exacerbated Zambia’s ongoing power deficit, primarily caused by the country’s prolonged drought and its impact on hydropower generation.
Zesco urged customers to exercise caution and treat all power lines as live at all times, as power supply schedules may fluctuate without notice.
“The Corporation regrets the impact of this unplanned power import reduction and
seeks our customers understanding and cooperation.”
“In this period of emergency load management, customers are advised to strictly treat all power supply lines to be live at all times, as power supply schedules may change without prior notice,” stated the utility.
ZESCO assured the public that the company will monitor this situation and update its customers as more Information becomes available.
