POLICE in Lusaka have sent a notorious criminal on permanent retirement from his thieving activities as well as from breathing.
A dramatic chase through the dusty streets of Lusaka’s SOS area ended in death for Shimpundu, a notorious criminal who had been topping the list of wanted criminals for causing mayhem in the country.
Shimpundu received his share of the refined natural resource (Copper) as it struck him while trying to escape until he bled to death on Thursday.
Yesterday the business as usual mood in the SOS area was put on stand still, as people scampered in all directions in order to seek cover following a crack of gunfire that echoed in the environment.
The ones behind the noise was a group of police officers who were in pursuit of an assailant Duncan Mwaba alias Shimpundu, that had a plan in motion to rob one of the malls in Lusaka. However, the cops got wind of his plots and planted an ambush and the suspect landed in their net.
It is reported that the previous day, a tip-off led police to intercept one of Shimpundu’s accomplices, 31 year old Charles Daka.
Daka was found in possession of three small explosives.
Upon interrogation with some painful encouragement Daka spilled the beans, revealing their plans, including a high-stakes heist at Twikatane Mall.
The cops set a trap and a confrontation between them and Shimpundu ignited.
According to the police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, despite officers firing warning shots, Shimpundu refused to surrender, triggering a deadly Tom and Jerry chase.
“When confronted by officers, the deceased attempted to flee. Despite officers firing three warning shots, the suspect persisted in evading arrest,” Hamoonga disclosed.
“In the ensuing pursuit, the suspect was shot but continued to flee. Subsequently, members of the public alerted police that the injured suspect was hiding in the flowers in the SOS area. Officers immediately responded and found him severely bleeding.”
Rushed to the hospital, his life slipped away and transitioned to Chalo cha malubamaluba.
Following the incident, police Investigations revealed that the group, including the deceased, was involved in multiple robberies and were involved stealing explosives to blow up safes during their robberies.
Some of the places they are linked to have robbed include: Zanaco Express – Chibombo, Pep Store – Kitwe, Puma Filling Station – Choma, Agora Loans Company – Kalomo, Marcopolo Tiles Agent – Chipata among others with plans to cause more chaos in their wake.
