Cop on bike dies after colliding with vehicle

A POLICE officer has been killed in a road traffic accident that occurred this morning in Woodlands, Lusaka.

40 year old Sergeant Mike Mumba, was riding a BMW motorbike when he collided with a Toyota Allex at the junction of Mosi-O-Tunya and Nyatwa Roads.

He succumbed to head injuries at Maina Soko Medical Centre.

The driver of the Toyota Allex, Charles Tembo, 43, sustained injuries and is currently in police custody.

Police investigations indicate that the accident occurred when the driver of the Toyota Allex turned right without exercising due care and attention, colliding with the motorbike, which had the right of way.

According to police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, Tembo is expected to be charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

The Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba extended condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased officer.

Meanwhile the Zambia Police Service urged all road users to “exercise maximum caution and adhere to traffic rules and regulations to avoid such tragic incidents.”
