In the early hours of today, the country woke up to shocking news of a Marcopolo bus that had overturned due to excessive speed causing the driver to lose control and leave passengers in serious injuries and four dead on the spot.
The Bus had left Intercity bus terminals in the early hours of today on a journey to South Africa.
On board were several passengers among which were Zambian business men and women, including Malambo who were traveling for business and other reasons.
But as the Juldan Motorways’ Marcopolo bus entered Kafue, the driver, Lebani Mwanza, aged 32, suddenly lost control of the vehicle and overturned at the Kafue Boys Secondary School junction along the Great North Road (Southbound) around 04:30 hours.
The Overturn left the bus in extensive damage, killing four people on the spot while 29 sustained serious injuries.
Police officers who rushed to the scene discovered among the survivors, 11 male adults, 17 female adults, and one female juvenile while the exact number of passengers who were on board remains unknown.

Hamoonga said among the four that died was one male adult, two female adults, and a female juvenile while the driver is among the survivors admitted.
“Their bodies have been deposited at the Kafue General Hospital mortuary, awaiting formal identification by their families.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred due to excessive speed, which caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The bus overturned and landed on its right side,” said Hamoonga.
He added that the remaining passengers could not be accounted for as they were neither found at the scene nor admitted to the hospital.
“Further investigations are underway, and more details will be provided as they become available. We extend our condolences to the bereaved families and wish those injured a speedy recovery,” said Hamoonga.
