WHAT started as a typical hustling day for two young illegal miners in Luanshya, Copperbelt has become a tragic history after one of them died while the other faces a long walk behind bars.

Two weeks ago, a 17-year-old suspect and his friend, Luckson Sikaonga, 20, went to engage in illegal mining at Pit 7 of the Luanshya Mine and started fighting which led to the wounding of Sikaonga.

At around 02:00 hours, the two friends got into an argument that turned physical. In the heat of the fight, the younger miner picked up a stone and struck Sikaonga in the abdomen.

As the situation intensified, other miners intervened, but the teen accidentally hit Sikaonga in the left abdomen with a shovel.

The incident, which took place last month end, was not reported to the police until October 6, when Sikaonga began complaining of severe abdominal pain.

He was rushed to Roan General Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.

Sadly, despite surviving for a week, Sikaonga died a day after being admitted to the hospital.

His death was later reported by his father, Reuben Sikaonga, 47, to the Mpatamatu Police Station.

Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer, Peacewell Mweemba, confirmed the incident in a statement, adding that the suspect had been arrested following the report.

“Unfortunately, on October 7, at around 19:00 hours, after undergoing an operation, Sikaonga passed away. The suspect is currently in police custody awaiting a court appearance,” Mweemba said.
