A DARK cloud covered the horizon for two families in Southern Province yesterday after the death of two men who were crushed by trucks while cycling in separate accidents..

Timothy Mudenda aged 77 and Obby Nchimunya in his early 30s shared a similar fate after the duo were bashed by two trucks while cycling and died on the spot.

The first incident happened when Mudenda, of Choma district was yesterday cycling his Eagle bicycle around 11:00 hours just opposite Zanaco bank, along the Great North Road.

Behind him was 62 year-old George Miyoba who was driving a Volvo Truck and Trailer bearing registration numbers AMB 1028 and AMB 1012.

Miyoba is reported to have misjudged his clearance distance and speed of Mudenda who was cycling in front of him, which led to the truck hitting him in the process.

The senior citizen, Mudenda was hit by the trailer, and fell on the road. While on the ground, he was later run over by the rear tyres of the same trailer.

Due to the impact, he sustained a crushed head which is beyond recognition and died on the spot.

The second accident occurred in Livingstone, where Nchimunya was also cycling using the left lane yesterday around 10:40 hours, along Victoria Falls Road near Dry Manzi area.

Behind him also was a Scania Truck and Trailer bearing registration numbers HP 87 WRGP and  HH 74 ZWGP which was being driven by Kalobi Lehana Esael aged 52, who is a South African national.

The driver also, due to other errors of judgement bypassed the cyclist and hit him with the trailer.

The impact of the accident saw Nchimunya sustain a deep cut on the head and right hip which saw him dying on the spot.

His body was later deposited to Batoka mortuary hospital awaiting postmortem.

Southern Province Police Commanding officer, Auxensio Daka confirmed both incidents.

He said the matters were both reported to police who rushed to the accident scenes and impounded the vehicles.

“The two motor vehicles have been impounded waiting for examination by Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) officers while Miyoba has been charged and detained for the offence of causing death by dangerous driving,” said Daka.
