10 people have died in an accident after the earth collapsed on them at Luili Gold mine in Mumbwa
According to a statement from the police, five others have been retrieved alive and nursing injuries at Nangoma Mission Hospital.
It is reported that the deceased, the survivors and other unknown number of people went to conduct mining activities at the pit yesterday morning of which the earth collapsed on them as they were conducting mining activities.
Other miners are reportedly still trapped in the debris and efforts to rescue them are still underway.
According to Central province police commissioner Charity Chanda, the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at Mumbwa General Hospital Mortuary.
“The Zambia Police Service, in collaboration with other relevant authorities, is working diligently to ascertain the exact number of people who were in the mine at the time of the accident and to provide assistance to those affected,” noted Chanda.
