FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who arrived in Malawi as part of an African tour, was greeted by Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya at Kamuzu International Airport.
However, his itinerary has been significantly altered following the unexpected death of Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima, the Vice President of Malawi.
Initially, Infantino had a series of engagements planned in Malawi which were scheduled for today but have now been largely canceled to honour the mourning period for Vice President Chilima.
The FIFA President expressed deep sorrow over the loss and conveyed his condolences to President Dr Lazarus Chakwera, the second family, and the nation of Malawi.
In a show of respect, Infantino intends to meet with President Chakwera and the bereaved family to offer his condolences personally.
Despite the change in plans, he will also hold a brief meeting with Fleetwood Haiya and the FAM executive committee before his departure to Zambia later today.
